Each channel has a role
OTAs can help independent hotels reach new guests and markets. Direct booking offers more control over communication, the guest relationship and the purchase journey. The goal is a sustainable channel mix, not an all-or-nothing choice.
Compare net outcomes
Direct reservations may also carry booking-engine, advertising and payment costs. Compare equivalent stays and conditions, then consider cancellations and repeat-guest potential. A lower commission percentage does not automatically mean a lower acquisition cost.
Give guests a reason to book direct
Make the official website fast, clear and mobile-friendly. Explain genuine benefits such as flexible conditions or personalized service. If the booking engine is confusing or offers a worse final price without an advantage, guests may return to an OTA.
Adapt distribution to demand
Strong dates may require fewer incentives; softer dates may benefit from the reach of intermediaries. Review by stay date, lead time and source market while respecting distribution agreements.
Track the right metrics
Monitor channel mix, net revenue, acquisition cost, booking-engine conversion and cancellations. The right balance changes over time and deserves regular review.
Takeaway: The goal is not a universal formula, but better decisions for each hotel and each stay date.
